SISSA, O’BRIEN & SALSMAN

We started August with Nick and his young fellas Nicholas and Michael, Grant with his daughter Margot and our good mate Brendan O’Brien. They started their Guatemala experience climbing 13000ft Volcan Acatenango in testing conditions and finished up with 2 days on the water. We had 2 incredible days out there, the sailfish bite was slower than average though the blue marlin bite was on fire. We went 6 from 12 on sailfish and an incredible 5 from 8 bites on blue marlin over 2 days with 1 mahi mahi in the bin. Nick was on fire going 3 for 3 on blue marlin and 2 from 2 on sailfish, the kids got into the sailfish and mahi, having a ball out there. Flat seas, good times.

Day 2 going 4-6 on blues and 2 from 4 on sailfish
THE SMITH BROTHERS

Cantey Smith a Guatemalan veteran introduced brothers Park and Champ to the Oasis and 3 days of fishing aboard Allure II. What a fun trip with some epic blue marlin bites and 8 yf tuna in the boat along with sailfish. The first day to the east we raised 5 blue marlin releasing 1 from 3 bites and going 2 from 2 on sailfish. With wind predicted from the east their second day we went and fished off the edge to the west and raised 7 blue marlin going 3 from 5 bites, that’s how good the blue marlin bite was out there, some epic switch bites! Going back to the west their last day we raised 2 blues releasing 1 from 1 bite and going 7 from 10 on sailfish with 1 mahi in the bin That’s a great way for the brothers to bond right there! 5 from 9 bites on blues and 7 from 11 on sails with one mahi.

JAY & IRA

Jay Stuckey and Ira deserve a special mention. Back in ’21 we had our best blue marlin day aboard Allure II, with Jay and his grandson Brian, they released 8 blue marlin from 13 bites. This trip he released 5 blue marlin by himself in one day, our best day on blues for a solo angler. I think in all the years he has been coming to fish with us he has only missed out on releasing blue, black or striped marlin once. No one has released more blue marlin aboard Allure II than our good friend Jay. He brings the luck, no doubt about it. He released 7 from 10 bites this trip along with 4 from 5 bites on sailfish and a one day 5 from 7 bites on blue marlin. Exceptional, 72 yrs young and still kicking butt.

CAPT MICK, JIMMY JAS & MIKE STRAIT

Awesome to catch up with these pirates after all these years, we first started fishing these fellas over 20yrs ago! Day one we found a current line holding a huge log. We raised 7 blue marlin around that log and released 2 from 4 bites including a beauty for Jimmy. Just before the request to pull lines lines and head in early we raised a tripe header of blues, one would not switch off the teaser and both rigger lines went down hooking a double header, one threw the hook, the other Jimmy released. We also released 1 from 2 sailfish and boated 2 nice mahi mahi. Unfortunately the ‘Guatemalan Flu’ had us pull lines at 1:00pm to head back to the dock….The next day we just could not get on them releasing 2 from 3 bites on sailfish. Good times catching up down at the Lodge, great banter and trips down memory lane. Now if we could just know when to call it quits at the bar…….

Congrats Jimmy!, Beautiful fish.
3 GENERATIONS OF THE STOOVER FAMILY

Nice to welcome 3 generations of the Stoover boys to the Lodge and our fishery here. That’s David II, David III and 12 yr old David IV along with 9yr old Gus. 2 days on the water, we went wide to the blue marlin honey hole that did not produce for us this time, they did release 4 from 6 sailfish and boat 8 tunas including a beauty 116lb yf tuna for 12 year old Gus. Next day we went east and found some fish releasing 2 from 4 blue marlin and 1 from 2 bites on sailfish to push us over 20 blue marlin releases for the month of August. Unfortunately we pulled the hook on a nice 30lb mahi and we also raised the biggest blue we’ve seen here in a few years, got a great switch bite off the teaser, though missed it. All in all. Great trip for the family!

That there is 12 days of fishing in August. We released 21 blue marlin from 36 bites raising 48 for the month. The best 12 days of blue marlin fishing we have had in Guatemala. Quite a few crash bites on the teasers that did not stick around and fish that came in hot though did not switch to the bait. The sailfish bite was a bit slower though many days we were just pulling 4 big teasers and a lure down the middle not even putting baits in the riggers, concentrating on blue marlin working the edges and deep water trying to make the most of what was out there. We did raise 51 sailfish for the month releasing 27 from 41 bites. There were tunas out there though the mahi bite was unseasonably slow.

The Bonze Lures Submission was the hot teaser for the month, raising the most and biggest blues we saw, the Violator was second with the Capt Jono teaser/mudflap combo a close 3rd.
Thanks to all our anglers who believed my rant about these months being some of the better months here for variety, blue marlin and coming down to fish with us. Many days we were the only boat out there which makes you wonder how good it really was and had there been more coverage and communication how much better it could have been. We are taking bookings for next June through August!
In the meantime we are counting down to late October through December. I think the blues will be out there in numbers along with sailfish and the big tunas as well. We are filling up dates so get in to get out there. January through May are our prime months. We have excellent boats to choose from and are predicting it to be red hot.
In the meantime we are busy with Lodge and boat maintenance ensuring nothing but the best experience for our clients.
Thanks once again from all of us here at the Oasis for coming and sharing this amazing Lodge and fishery with us…
