FISHING THROUGH END OF FEBRUARY…….

SEAN HORIGAN GROUP

R-L: Sean with partners in crime Craig, Darcy and Miller

Feb 27-28 it was the first time back to Guatemala for the above crew in 10-11yrs. Good to see the fishing hasn’t changed that much in all those years….

Shaun even managed to release one on the hookless flat line teaser……don’t see that too often.

The boys had a blast with 58 sailfish into the spread and one nice fat blue marlin that came in looking like it was going to eat, then faded off. Out of that they released 33 sailfish and quite a few beers in the process……

MEREDITH McCORD GROUP

L-R Meredith with fishing buddies John Tobola and wife Dolores Cavatore.

Feb 23-26th. Great to see fly fishing guru Meredith back down here in Guatemala and the Oasis Lodge after a 5 year absence, this time introducing John and Dolores for their first experience trying for billfish on the fly.

Bit sporty out there our first day out though from there on in we had good conditions. Over the trip we raised 82 sailfish into the spread along with 2 blue marlin. Some hot fish in the mix, and more than a few that teased in halfway and disappeared, frustrating stuff. The blues both came in, though without the commitment you need to see.

John got his first cast before he could even get a practice in and released his fist sail in the first 5 mins of the day……also managing to land a nice 25lb tuna for lunch…..and dinner on our second day out.

Dolores did an excellent job especially on her last fish of the trip, a tough fish that stayed down and dirty, but a great effort to get the release! They had such a good time that they extended their 2 day trip another day.

Meredith fished alone on our last day out and mixed it up getting releases on 8lb test, 12lb test and the standard 20lb test tippet we use here. A great day with 30 sailfish raised and a good day for R&D on the different tippet strengths put to the test.

A couple of hefty ones out there too:

Good job and good luck to her with all the blue water fly fishing goals in the future!!

A great trip with an awesome group, so much so that John and Dolores have re-booked for early April with their son Colin and Meredith is booking a multiple boat couples trip for next February!

RICK PITCAIRN

Feb 26-28th Rick came for his first ever experience targeting billfish on the fly with Capt Mike Sheeder aboard the Intensity….

And the bite picked up some, with excellent instruction they raised 86 sailfish and released 18 on the fly. A great effort by Rick who also is planning his return trip to the Oasis…..

GEORGE GEIER

George and good hunting and fishing friend Keith fished Feb 21-24 and after a tough start they got into them with a great bite on their last day….

Also plenty of mahi mahi in the mix and Keith boated a nice 20lb+ bull as well as a bunch of schoolies.

After releasing 24 sailfish on their last day and boating a 25lb yellowfin they have also re-booked for next February. Better get in, February is already looking good on the books!

FRYMIRE GROUP

February 19-21 the Frymire group came in for a 3 day fly fishing trip aboard Intensity. The above video says it all. These guys have been coming to Guatemala fishing the fly for the past 10yrs and this year did not disappoint with 44 fish raised and the bite to raise ratio was up there with the guys releasing 15 sails. Great trip!

After a couple of weeks of long runs to get to the blue / warmer fish holding water the current has pushed some good water in and the fishing is on the up as a result. We are looking at a good March ahead both fishing and booking’s wise. We do still have availability on both ALLURE II and INTENSITY. Get in touch and secure your dates ASAP as we are getting enquiries. We will be available on ALLURE II through May 13th and INTENSITY will also be available to charter moving into the summer months. There is a chance that we are taking ALLURE II to Chiapas late May into early June. This has been an amazing trip in the past with large tunas, mahi mahi and of course sailfish and a good blue marlin bite. Get in touch if you’re interested to explore this isolated coast off Mexico.
