You can experience incredible sailfish numbers in every month that we fish. Likewise, we catch blue marlin throughout the year.
That said, we divide the calendar into two parts. Both are great. If you’re able, we’d love to show you the charm and advantage of each.
Peak Sailfish, Blue Marlin Around:
November Through April
If you were to plan to target the best sailfishing of the year, you might consider coming from November through April. Every year, we’ll have groups during this time that release more than 30 fish in a day or have 80 or 100 bites.
This time of year is great. The sailfish numbers not only mean a good shot at putting up great release numbers, but also the chance to hook and catch multiples. Experiencing the cockpit dance that takes place when a pack of four or five sails appears in the spread is one of Guatemala’s great charms.
The consistency and number of sailfish also make this a great time to target sailfish on the fly. This is exciting stuff… You tease them to right behind the boat, the bite takes place on the surface, sometimes within 10 feet of the transom.
And while sailfish numbers are the calling card this time of year, we catch plenty of blue marlin, too. Adding dorado and yellowfin tuna to the mix, you start to see just how good this time of year can be.

May Through October
Guatemala’s blue marlin fishery is very good. Summer time means calm seas and blue marlin. We also catch lots and lots of sailfish this time of year too.

On the day we set the lodge record, we had 13 blue marlin bites and released 7. That’s without a real-time sonar and without FADs.
Most times throughout the year, there are enough blue marlin around that we have the chance to catch one or two on a trip. May through October they are here in their best numbers. We’ll get waves of marlin throughout the year beyond that window.
There are not many places in the world that offer even the slightest chance to release 30 sailfish and two blue marlin in a trip—let alone a day. We can’t promise it will happen for you in Guatemala, but it happens quite a bit. And we are always ready when the opportunity presents itself.
When the blue marlin are thick, we can target them on the fly. That is some exciting stuff.
The best fishing for big yellowfin tuna often coincides with the best blue marlin fishing.
