Yellow Fin Tuna
Yellowfin Tuna
Boat lunches and poolside happy hour at Sailfish Oasis are better because of Guatemala’s consistent yellowfin tuna fishery. We catch plenty of tuna, some big ones, too.
The lodge record yellowfin went 269-pounds. That’s a solid tuna anywhere.
The World’s Best Billfish Fishery, with a side of Sashimi. A Click Away.
Often, we find schools of tuna offshore, frequently with pods of spinner dolphin. We troll around them and catch lots of tuna in the 60-100-pound range.
Sometimes we find tuna under birds. When they’re up top crashing bait, we can sling poppers to them on our big spinning outfits. Having a tuna blast a popper can change your perspective… It’s awesome.
When we find the tuna, we’ll sometimes add a sea witch on a ballyhoo or an islander/ballyhoo combo to the spread. When it gets hit on the troll, there’s no mistaking what’s happened. The reel sings, the clicker whines, and its game on.
We catch many of our big yellowfin live baiting with bonito. The Allure II is equipped with tuna tubes. If we find tuna around schools of bonito, we’ll deploy the live baits. This is a great way to catch blue marlin, too.
Sailfish Oasis provides the complete Guatemala experience in a way that is boutique, curated, and makes you the star of the show.
The yellowfin fishery here is good and consistent. The best time of year to target big ones is perhaps April through August, but we catch them throughout the year.
When you add the chance to eat fresh-caught yellowfin sashimi, sushi, and all manner of seared and grilled entrée, to the chance to catch a pile of sailfish and some good blue marlin fishing, you begin to understand the charm of fishing in Guatemala.
